A Message from Interim Superintendent Bruce Watson
October 14, 2017
Dear Glen Rock Public School families,
Following is the text of a letter that I sent out earlier this afternoon to the parents of our middle and high school students. It concerns an incident that occurred yesterday, Oct. 13, which impacted the school day for those students. I feel the particulars should be shared with all of you, the greater GRPS community.
Bruce Watson
Interim Superintendent of Schools

Dear Glen Rock Middle School and High School Parents,

I’m reaching out to you with regard to the situation on the GRMS/HS campus yesterday, Oct. 13.
Late yesterday morning, the high school administration became aware of a potential threat against the school building, stemming from a dispute between a Glen Rock student and an individual from another community.

Glen Rock Police were contacted and upon their arrival, the district was directed to issue an immediate on-site evacuation of the campus. Staff and students followed our normal protocol and evacuated to their assigned places on the perimeter of the campus.

As the police began their investigation, they determined that the threat of a bomb was unsubstantiated and therefore directed that the staff and students return to the building. Simultaneously, an interview with the Glen Rock student was arranged in the high school principal’s office. Again under the direction of the police, the campus was placed in a Hold-in-Place while the interview was being conducted.

Because of the prolonged interview, it was decided that the students would remain in their classrooms until dismissal. It was also felt that in deference to the comfort level of the students, middle school students would be released at the high school dismissal time of 2:54 p.m., rather than hold them until 3:07 p.m. In addition, all afterschool clubs and on-site athletics were cancelled.

I am pleased to report that as of this morning, all school activities on campus have resumed. The police are continuing their investigation of the situation. I will share any further developments should that be necessary.
Bruce Watson
Interim Superintendent of Schools

Standardized Assessment Schedules
September 28, 2017
Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:7C-6.6, school districts and charter schools must, by October 1 of each year, provide parents or guardians certain information on any State assessment or commercially-developed standardized assessment that will be administered in that school year.
The information provided in the attached chart is a tentative standardized assessment calendar.  The administration date indicates the window available for testing.  Each respective building will be creating testing windows that will provide for the least amount of disruption to the educational day.  If a student is permitted extra time or any other accommodations, the respective school administration and Special Services personnel will work together to schedule the appropriate accommodations.
Links to testing information, background data, and/or sample test problems where available for each of the specific tests are included in the chart. As each testing window nears, parents can expect a letter from their child's school detailing their specific protocols for that test administration.
If you have any questions, please contact your child's school.

Please click here to view the chart.

December 22, 2015
In compliance with N.J.S.A. 18A:37-17a and the annual review of the Board of Education’s HIB policy as required in N.J.S.A. 18A:37-15c, the Glen Rock School District has completed a self-assessment in determining the district’s status in complying with the ABR Act. The district is required to report to the BOE and the public the exact grade reports issued by the NJDOE. The purpose is to provide the board and the public the opportunity to learn about the district’s implementation of the ABR. Glen Rock will use this information in its annual review of its HIB prevention programs, approaches and other initiatives. In completing the self-assessment, the use of the reference to “HIB” is intended to be broader than the terms “harassment, intimidation and bullying;” it includes initiatives aimed at addressing anti-bullying and the improvement of school climates, school cultures and other conditions that negatively affect student learning and growth.

NJDOE School Self Assessment for Determining Grades Under the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights
January 5, 2015
Beginning with the September 2011-2012 school year, our school has conscientiously implemented the requirements found in the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act.
During the first three years of implementation of the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, our school has made progress in addressing and improving harassment, intimidation and bullying and the school climate and culture through activities, educational programs and student  assemblies.
The law requires a Self-Assessment, which we completed last June for the 2013-2014 school year.  Through that assessment we learned that our school has demonstrated
strengths in all areas of the Self-Assessment.  Reflected below are the indicators with the maximum points allowed and Byrd’s score:
  • HIB Programs Approaches or Other Initiatives: Max.= 15; Byrd’s grade = 15
  • Training on the BOE-Approved HIB Policy: Max.= 9; Byrd’s grade = 9
  • Other Staff Instruction and Training Programs: Max. =15; Byrd’s grade = 14
  • Curriculum and Instruction on HIB and Related Information and Skills: Max. = 6; Byrd’s grade = 6
  • HIB Personnel: Max.= 9; Byrd’s grade = 9
  • School-Level HIB Incident Reporting Procedure: Max. = 6; Byrd’s grade = 5
  • HIB Investigative Procedure: Max. = 12; Byrd’s grade = 12
  • HIB Reporting: Max = 6; Byrd’s grade = 6
  • Grade for the School: Max. = 78; Byrd’s grade = 76
The Self-Assessment helped our school identify areas for improvement in the
following areas: continued activities to promote a positive school climate.
Our district and schools plan to further assess strengths and vulnerabilities for learning by conducting a school climate survey during the upcoming year.  The school district and school will be seeking your input in this survey.

Certain changes have been made to the Bee this year:  hard copies of the registration forms and practice words will no longer be delivered to each school, but will be accessible on the Glen Rock School District website; participants and their parent/guardian will be asked to sign a Code of Conduct in order to participate; and the practice round of words has been eliminated.  It is our belief that these changes will foster an efficient and respectful environment for the 4th and 5th graders of Glen Rock schools to successfully participate in the Bee.
