Principal’s Message

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Byrd School webpage! Byrd School serves approximately 270 students from kindergarten through 5th grade. Our students enjoy a safe and positive learning environment as we work toward our school goal that all students will achieve at their highest potential. We provide an environment and educational experience that enables all students to become successful members of our community through consistent social and academic development.

As the principal of the Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, my main goal is to ensure that every student is provided the highest quality of education possible in a safe and supportive learning environment.  Working together as a team with our amazing staff and parents, I am committed to helping each student achieve their very best.  I believe children should learn the academic and social skills necessary to become independent, responsible, life-long learners.  Our staff prides itself on the students’ success and continues to move forward through thoughtful planning, maintenance of effective curriculum, and creation of new programs and powerful partnerships with both parents and community members.  The more the school and family are joined as partners in education, the greater our chance for success.

We know that high expectations for student achievement combined with adequate support and intervention will result in academic proficiency and growth. At Byrd, our focus is to help children learn and grow. To do this, our teaching and professional development must be intentional and purposeful. Cooperation, collaboration, and communication are an important part of our educational success.

In addition to the high quality instructional programs in all content areas, the curriculum is enriched through our music, visual arts, media center, physical education, and World Language programs. Specialized programs offered to students include basic skills instruction, special education, English as a second language, speech, gifted and talented, and character education.  Additionally, there are many exciting opportunities for students to explore their interests outside of the classroom through extracurricular activities such as fifth grade reading buddies with kindergartners, 5th grade Safety Patrol, Morning Chorus and band for 4th and 5th graders and Student Council for third through fifth grades.  Additionally, we celebrate Byrd School as a community with our Byrd Community Groups which are heterogeneously, multi-graded groups of students who meet with a faculty advisor every four to six weeks to join together on activities that promote a kindness theme.  This year’s theme is Kindness Rocks!

Our dedicated Home and School Association sponsors many exciting events and activities with a focus on students and education.  We are fortunate that we have parent volunteers that help add to the rich learning experiences for our students.  Even the smallest contribution of a parent’s time is greatly valued.

As a parent and a grandparent, I encourage you to stay active in your child's education.  Taking just a few minutes in the evening to read to your child, talk with your child about school, or simply see that your child is organized for the next school day can have great benefits.

And, finally, I maintain an open door policy. Please don’t ever hesitate to stop in, E mail or call me if there’s anything I can do for you. I encourage you, however, to schedule an appointment (via E-mail is best) if you need a block of time
